Why the leak is hidden in the first place

The point of every method is the same, put the opening exactly where the leak is, not where it looks like it might be.

Reading your own early warning signs

Most leaks announce themselves quietly before they announce themselves expensively. A water bill that climbs with no change in habits is the classic first sign. So is a spot of floor that is warm underfoot when the rest is cool, the trace of a hot water line running under the slab. A faint mildew smell in a closet or a section of baseboard that stays slightly damp both point the same direction.

If you catch any of these, the useful move is to find your main shutoff and confirm it turns, then call. Catching a slab or supply leak while it is a stain on a baseboard is a very different repair from catching it after it has soaked a subfloor.
